First sampling day of the mesocosm experiment.
by Nafsika P. & Vicky K.
9 mesocosms consisting of 3 conditions and 3 replicates per condition.
In each bag water samples were taken from two different water column depths and afterwards sediment cores were taken from the bottom of each mesocosm bag.
Today we finished the last technical additions:
Today we collected the sediment and placed it in the mesocosm bags. This it was the most difficult part of the mesocosms construction because the sediment sampling was made by a hand grab and we had to work with a temperature of 35oC.
Today we filled the mesocosms with coastal seawater from a site in the vicinity of the mesocosm facilities. The water was carried to the mesocosms with tanks of 1 m³.
In addition we collected seawater samples to determine the nutrient concentrations and the zooplankton abundances in the water used to fill the mesocosms.
The HYPOXIA mesocosm experiment will start next week. So these days the team has to make the final preparations in order everything everything to be ready for the filling of the mesocosms next Monday.
Today we cleaned the tanks that will be used to carry the sea water to the mesocosm facility. This procedure inlcudes initial acid-wash of every tank followed by washing with distilled water.
